Ten things you wish someone had told you about working for yourself

This is the second part of the two part series that provides ten tips about running your own business.

6. Business Plans do Help

Writing a business plan helps  to keep you on track when you have feelings of self doubt.  It helps you to understand where you are heading and realign yourself appropriately.  And, the best thing is there is no trick to writing a business plan.  It is all about the What, Where, When, How and Who

7. Don’t be precious about your business

Try to remember that business is about generating revenue and profit.  If you aren’t satisfied with the amount of revenue or profit you are earning you probably need to change something!  If you do, then change it.  A short amputation is better than a long slow death!

8. Try to maintain balance

Family support for your business can really help you keep it together.  Making sure that you continue to communicate and be available both physically and emotionally for your family will help you to feel better about yourself.  And, it will improve the chances that they will be there for you when you need them.

9. Don’t outsource your core business.

There is a great deal of support for outsourcing business functions to alleviate the need for business owners to build infrastructure and resources.  This is great when it comes to professional services that provide support in areas where business owners do not have any expertise.  However, when it comes to your area of expertise or core business you should stick to it and never outsource a function of your business that will impact on revenue.

10. Grow yourself and your business

Make it a part of your plan to increase your knowledge by applying yourself to growth.  Simple things like reading books written about what you do and how it can be done better, bigger, stronger or simply challenging yourself to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable will help eliminate boredom and allow you to add value to your business.

We hope that you have been able to glean something from our tips.  For further information or assistance with your business, please contact any of the helpful team here at S4BG

Great blog :-) . All good things to know. Especially maintaining balance. As kookey as it sounds, when you get too caught up in it all and you just can’t see the light of day….. meditate. It will give you clarity.
