SARAH: Today we’ll be speaking to the lovely Alycia Edgar @alyciaedgar!!
We’re interviewing lovely Alycia ‘Empowering Women to Achieve their Goals and be Successful. Join us at #S4BG http://bit.ly/buszQ3
Alycia is the Founder of Coastal Accounting Services. Alycia is an innovative accountant, who enjoys working with numbers and small businesses. Alycia enjoys beach walking in her home town of Jan Jac, sewing and beautiful stationary.
Welcome Alycia, thanks for joining us today!
ALYCIA:
Thanks Sarah, so glad to be here. And thank you for the lovely introduction
SARAH:
My pleasure! Alycia can you please tell us what you do?
ALYCIA:
Sure. We educate small business about the simplicity of their numbers & how to utilise systems & innovation to improve their business.
SARAH:
How do you go about educating a business?
ALYCIA:
By looking at the story behind the numbers, and then the biz owner can see how they came about. Then seek to improve.
SARAH:
What inspired you to get into this business?
ALYCIA:
I have an analytical mind, love being challenged & being in business also gave me the ability to be able to work around my family.
SARAH:
What do you like most about the being an accountant?
ALYCIA:
Educating biz owners with the knowledge of how they, through their numbers are driving their business. And & I just love it when they get it, the penny drops and they can see how much an impact knowing their numbers can have
SARAH:
How do you add value to businesses?
ALYCIA:
Understand the operational side of a business by discussion and observation with the business owner & then assist the owner to be highly focused & productive through the use of innovative systems and processes.
SARAH:
As a woman, are there any challenges you have faced in the accounting industry?
ALYCIA:
Only in the corporate world in general. It was always better if you made your boss (male) think it was their idea. Can work for hubbys too!
SARAH:
lol!!
How do you set your goals?
ALYCIA:
Brainstorm away from the office & distractions & let your mind think big. Use pen & paper, sticky notes whatever helps w/creativity. Look towards the future, say 5 years & then work backwards. What mini goals would I need to achieve this big goal?
SARAH:
Where do you hope to see yourself and your business in 5 years?
ALYCIA:
Nationally recognised business, operating virtually throughout Australia including global products and programs.
SARAH:
Are there any barriers to achieving your goal that you believe are gender related?
ALYCIA:
Not really, for me its more of an internal struggle I have as a parent to be a great parent as well as achieve the goals of my biz.
SARAH:
How do you juggle your home life with your work life?
ALYCIA:
Setting boundaries for myself, my clients and my family. Set specific times for work and home. But sometimes you just have to go with the flow.
SARAH:
Have you noticed a change with how your advice is accepted by clients in the last 3 years?
ALYCIA:
Yes, more & more business owners are seeking external advice to assist with the internal operations of their business and realising that their tax accountant is not always the best person to assist with that analysis.
SARAH:
Why is the tax accountant not always the best person to assist with analysing a bizz & helping it grow?
ALYCIA:
They definitely can help them grow but aren’t always best placed to understand the operations of the business. The operations of the business form the foundations from which continued growth can be achieved. And sometimes without understanding the operations, practicalities are not realised.
SARAH:
What other tips would you give to women in business?
ALYCIA:
I live by the motto of no regrets. Have a go! Sure, you’ll make mistakes, but as long as you learn from them nothing is lost! Never take no as an answer, persistence is the key!
SARAH:
Great rules to follow, no regrets! Have a go! Make mistakes, as long as you learn from them nothing is lost!
ALYCIA:
Just because someone says it can’t be done, just means they haven’t tried it you’re way.
SARAH:
That’s all we have time for today! I hope enjoyed today’s interview?
A big thank you to Alycia It’s been a pleasure! A big thank you for everyone who tuned in today.
ALYCIA:
Thanks so much Sarah, I have enjoyed answering your questions!
SARAH:
Next weeks special guest is taking the cupcake world by storm! We speak to Kath @cupcakewrapper
